Melbourne ranked in world’s top 50 unis
Thursday 11 November 2004
The University of Melbourne has been listed by The Times Higher Education Suppl
ement (THES) at number 22 in the top 50 universities in the world. Melbourne ca
me in ahead of Cornell University, Johns Hopkins, University College London, th
e University of California Los Angeles and San Diego.
Five other Group of Eight universities were named in the top 50 – the Australi
an National University, Monash University, University of Sydney, University of
New South Wales, and the University of Queensland.
The THES has ranked 200 universities in 29 countries on the basis of a survey o
f 1300 academics in 88 countries while also taking into account cited research
produced, the ratio of academic staff to student numbers and an institution’s
attractiveness to foreign students and internationally renowned academics. Harv
ard was named at number one with Oxford and Cambridge fifth and sixth respectiv
ely.
University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwong Lee Dow, says that bec
ause the THES is a highly-respected British journal its survey will be taken se
riously.
He says that the University of Melbourne’s strength is the number of fields in
which it has internationally-recognised academic staff. “In such a survey, th
e University of Melbourne will be well-known for its research and will also com
e up well in its attractiveness to international students.
“While we know where the University is positioned amongst Australian universit
ies, it is very pleasing to see that we are so well-positioned in the world’s
top 200 universities.”
According to THES editor John O’Leary, leading universities increasingly defin
e themselves in terms of international competition. “By taking account of the
views of academics from across five continents and using the most up-to-date st
atistics, our ranking gives an informed picture of the world’s top universitie
s,’’ he claims.
