'Watch it, China' Wong committee told


Colourful Nationals Senator Ron Boswell has caused an uproar by apparently
referring to Climate Change Minister Penny Wong as "China".

Senator Boswell became heated on Monday during a Senate hearing on climate
change and accused Senator Wong and senior public servant Martin Parkinson of
blocking his questions.

"You are making this a high farce, now just watch it China," Senator Boswell
thundered at the witnesses.

It was not immediately clear if he was talking to Senator Wong, who is of
Malaysian heritage, or to Dr Parkinson, the secretary of the Department of
Climate Change.

A furore greeted Senator Boswell's comment as government senators called him
"bully boy Boswell".

Committee chair Helen Polley shouted repeatedly in an attempt to restore
order.

"Senator Boswell, can I just remind you ... it is inappropriate to threaten a
witness," she said.

Senator Polley ordered Senator Boswell to unreservedly withdraw the comment.
He said he would if it was considered threatening.

Senator Wong did not join the slanging match but did object to another
comment by Senator Boswell.

Senator Boswell is known for putting his views passionately and sometimes
combatively.

The Nationals landed in hot water over words last week when their Senate
leader Barnaby Joyce suggested foreign aid be slashed, and got his numbers
mixed up in a speech.

"China" can be used as rhyming slang for mate, as in "me old China plate".
