In the fall of 2004, U.S. celebrity Oprah Winfrey made news worldwide when she gave away 276 brand-new cars, each worth US$28,000. She hadn’t purchased them, of course─they were donated by a car company─and she wasn’t doing it just out of generosity. The whole thing was designed as a way of creating publicity for her talk show, Oprah.
Talk shows have been popular in the United States for at least thirty years. Here in Taiwan, they have appeared more recently, but they have rapidly gained popularity. Some are simply meant to be entertaining, they discuss subjects like how to recover from a broken heart, how to make and save money, or how to lose weight. Others deal with serious topics. Political talk shows are especially popular. One past topic, for example, was government sent several army generals onto TV talk shows to explain the great expense.
In the U.S., generals aren’t to likely to appear on talk shows, but almost anyone else might. The American talk show field is dominated by the “big three” of Oprah, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Larry King Live. All are popular and long-running programs, but each has it own style. Oprah tends to deal with social issues, and the guests are often “regular people.” The Late Show with David Letterman is as much about comedy as it is about interviews, and the celebrity guests who appear on the show are likely to be made fun of by the host. Larry King Live is more of a straight interview show, where movie stars or politicians are asked serious questions by long-time broadcaster Larry King.
In both Taiwan and the U.S., talk shows are likely to remain popular. Television companies like them because they are cheap to produce, and viewers like them because they are usually entertaining and can sometimes provide practical advice. Perhaps the next step for Taiwan is to find its own Oprah Winfrey to give away a few free cars!

★talk show:指脫口秀or談話性節目。
