An inaugural address by an American President typically reflects some now-traditional expectations and characteristics. One major function is to set the general tone of the new administration. On social, ecnomic, and military matters domestically and internationally, the President usually outlines in broad strokes some intended stances. But advocacy of specific, detailed policies and programs is not expected and abstract language may be more acceptable here than in other kinds of political discourse. A second major function is to promote social cohesion. The President seeks to heal the wounds and antagonisms of the recent political campaign, to urge reenergized commitment to central societal values and goals, and to promote a feeling of national unity. In an inaugural address, the President frequently will cite or adapt the words and wisdom of revered past Presidents and leaders . And such a speech may praise noble elements of America’s heritage and applaud America’s destiny.
