As an organized body of knowledge, urban morphology has existed for nearly a century. It was an integral part of urban geography from the inception of that subject, and in the German-speaking countries it has remained an important aspect. In the English-speaking world urban morphology, like urban geography, has a shorter history, dating essentially from the inter-war years. Furthermore, outside central Europe its position has been peripheral to the mainstream of geography for long periods, especially in the United States. This is reflected in the rarity of large-scale integrating studies, that by Vance being one of the few in the English language.

Urban areas are the environment of the large majority of the population of economically advanced countries. Production and maintenance of the physical fabric of that environment, especially the buildings, roads and services, absorbs a large amount of the wealth of the Western world. In most Western countries housebuilding alone absorbs some 20-5per cent of gross fixed investment. It also has major ramifications for other aspects of the economy. But the importance of the physical form of towns and cities derives at least as much from its social and cultural significance as from its economic role. This relates to a large degree to the role that the physical fabric performs as the visually dominant part of the urban environment, the urban landscape, or townscape.
