Vancouver Magazine
Best Formal Japanese:
#1 Tojos
1133 Broadway
604-872-8050
#2 Raw Bar at Blue Water Cafe
1095 Hamilton St.
604-688-8078
#3 EN
442 W. 10th Ave.
604-730-0330
#4 Yoshi
689 Deman St.
604-738-8226
#5 Octopus' Garden
1995 Cornwall Ave.
604-734-8971
Tojo Hidekazu continues to grow into his West Broadway temple to seasonal
and local. Tojo's (Gold) "sets the standard for innovation that remains true
to Japanese ideals of simplicity and freshness," said on judge. "Steamed
sablefish was buttery and perfectly cooked."
The Raw Bard at Blue Water Cafe (Silver) "consistently cranks out some of the
best sushi and sashimi anywhere," enthused another, "thanks to disciplined
and expert knife skills, top-notch sourcing, and informed service."
Bronze to En, the city's most understanding fusion restaurant.
Honourable Mentions to Yoshi (where devotees of soba and kaiseki continue to
flock) and Octopus' Garden (for top-drawer toro).
Best Casual Japanese:
#1 Kingyo
871 Denman St.
604-608-1677
#2 Zest Japanese Cuisine(這個是我個人最常去的,因為離家近)
2775 W. 16th Ave.
604-731-9378
#3 Okada
2nd Floor, 888 Nelson St.
604-899-3266
#4 Yuji's Japanese Tapas
2059 W. 4th Ave.
604-734-4990
#5 Guu
Various locations
Kingyo and chef Koji Zenimaru with Gold for the best Japanese "pub small
plates like seared beef tongue, tataki with yuzu, chicken karaage with three
types of salt, and the screamingly fresh sashimi platter. "Bonus points for
the 90-pound server that can drink you under the table and still maintain a
full section."
Zest (Silver), a regular haunt for many Japanese exparts, excels at unusual
dishes like geoduck salad and monkfish liver.
Check the fresh sheet at Okada (Bronze) for red miso soup with nameko
mushrooms or barbecued beef tongue.
Yuji's earns Honorable Mention for dishes like albacore tuna served three
ways, as does Guu (all locations) for rowdy rooms and equally riotous plates.
