COMPLEMENTARY TEAM ROLES
Having looked at the ways in which the roles of individual occupational therapists may develop, the following case vignette demonstrates the effective use of the complementary roles and skills of a multidisciplinary team:
Carl`s story
Carl`s first psychotic episode occurred when he was 21 and in the final year of his university mathematics degree.
Although this was the first time he had been seen by a psychiatrist, his parents had been worried about him since he was in his last year at school, preparing for A-levels when his behaviour had, to them at least, appeared strange.
He had at that time become increasingly distant from his family and friends, regarded attempts to draw him into family activities with suspicion and he had started to talk about complex conspiracy theories which were starting to overwhelm him so that he become alternately agitated and ready to fight society`s ills or pessimistic and despairing of the future.
At that time, Carl`s parents were reassured by their family doctor that he was most likely just going through the anxieties associated with growing from teens to adulthood and that this was all part of preparing to move away from the family and develop his own independence.
They continued to be worried about him, however.
Sometimes they felt it best to leave Carl to work out things for himself but more often got drawn into arguments with him when his ideas seemed extreme and his schoolwork got behind as he spent increasing time `researching` evidence for his theories regarding `next evolution` humans who were developing `ultra-sophisticated communication system`.
Carl`s father was embarrassed whenever Carl sought discussion with him on the subject and felt more than a little guilt at the relief he experienced when Carl eventually left home for university.
